One of the best-known of the traditional aromatic herbs. Valued for its small lavender flowers and fragrant gray leaves, it has been grown and used in Europe since the twelfth century. Jefferson listed it for planting in the Monticello kitchen garden in 1794. Thrives in sunny locations where the soil is not too rich and water never puddles. Sow in late spring or summer. Winter-hardy in zones 6-9.
